Why redirects matter for SEO
Every extra hop adds latency and makes crawlers spend budget on URLs that don't hold content. Chains longer than 5 hops may not be followed at all. Temporary 302 redirects left in place for months confuse search engines about which URL to show.
What a healthy setup looks like
- Exactly one canonical version: e.g.
https://www.example.com/. - The other three variants reach it in one 301 hop.
- The final URL returns 200 with no
X-Robots-Tag: noindex. - HTTPS is enforced with an HSTS header.
FAQ
301 or 308?
Both are permanent and pass signals the same way. 308 also keeps the request method (POST stays POST), which matters for APIs, not for pages.
Do redirects lose PageRank?
Google says permanent redirects pass full value, but long chains still slow crawling and indexing. Keep them short.
